As part of American Business Women's Day, we’re proud to spotlight Leah Cawley, an exceptional Dedicated Transportation Manager who oversees six Ruan operations across the Midwest. Happy American Business Women's Day!
Q: Tell us a little about your career path and background.
I found my calling to the transportation and logistics industry while attending Milwaukee Area Technical College, where I initially pursued a Funeral Services certificate. My interest in logistics sparked in 2012 when I accepted a position with UPS Freight. Starting as an Operations Clerk, I worked my way up to become a Service Center Manager.
In August 2019, I joined Ruan as a Dispatch Manager at our former Des Moines, IA, facility. I had the exciting opportunity to be part of the team that opened the new Ankeny Operating Center near Des Moines. In 2021, I was promoted to Dedicated Transportation Manager and currently oversee six different operations, 60 driving team members, and six office team members.
Q: What do you enjoy most about working for Ruan?
What I enjoy most about Ruan is the culture. It's rare to find a company that genuinely embodies the values it promotes, but Ruan does exactly that. Despite being a relatively large company, we maintain a strong family mindset. You rarely find a company of this size where the CEO walks in, knows you by name, and remembers something personal about you!
Q: What is your favorite memory during your time at Ruan?
The Ankeny Operating Center regularly hosts 'truck rodeos,' where team members from the Des Moines campus can step out of the office and behind the wheel for a driving obstacle course. Watching them navigate a truck and seeing the excitement on their faces is always a lot of fun. I believe it also gives them a unique perspective on their work, as they don’t often have the opportunity to be 'in the action' with operations or see firsthand how their efforts impact the field.
Q: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I enjoy camping with my husband and our two dogs. When I am not camping, I am always working on my green thumb in the yard and home. I also never turn down a chance to travel—I love experiencing new places and meeting new people.
Q: In what ways are you involved in your community?
I volunteer with Hope Animal Rescue, Give Grace Give Hope, and Habitat for Humanity. I have also participated in various neighborhood events in the Beaverdale community.
Q: What advice would you share with those considering joining the transportation and logistics industry?
Take the leap! The transportation and logistics industry offers so many diverse opportunities that there's truly a place for everyone. It's not just about operations—it takes a whole village to keep everything and everyone moving.
