Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week

Nov 15, 2021

National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) is November 15-21. A proven training model, apprenticeships play a key role in any industry. NAW is an opportunity to highlight how apprenticeships provide a critical talent pipeline that can help to address some of our nation’s pressing workforce challenges while also supporting younger generations and underserved communities alike.

Ruan is always looking for individuals who want a long-term career, enjoy solving problems, and desire to be part of a hardworking team of professionals. In an effort to attract and train the right talent, Ruan has implemented two apprenticeship programs—one for IT and one for skilled maintenance technicians. Both programs are available to individuals without prior training to learn from some of the best in the industry and become professionals in their field.

IT Apprenticeship Overview

Ruan initiated our technology-based apprentice program for high school students in 2017. In fact, Ruan’s IT Apprenticeship was the first registered technology-based apprenticeship program in the state of Iowa. We provide the opportunity for selected apprentices to gain valuable work experience, earn income, and continue their post-high school education. The program targets students taking cyber security courses, who enjoy technology, and are looking for an alternative to a four-year college or university.

Here’s a quick look at our IT apprenticeship program:

  • Up to 20 hours per week, targeting weekdays during the school year. Potential for weekend work.

  • Up to 40 hours per week during the summer.

  • Three-year competency-based program with progressive increase in pay and responsibility.

  • Apprentices work in many areas within our IT team, including Service Desk, ConnectUs, Development, Network, Hardware, and IT Operations.

  • Opportunity to be a part of the essential transportation and logistics industry.

  • Career development and advancement is important to us. We invest in our people with the goal of ongoing training for all team members.

  • Flat organizational structure allows our apprentices direct access to strategic decision makers and C-level executives.

Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Overview

The Ruan Technician Apprenticeship Program is available to individuals without prior technician training who want to learn from veteran diesel mechanics and become professional technicians. This program allows apprentices the opportunity to learn while working on the best late-model equipment in the trucking industry. Ruan provides apprentices with Snap-on tools that they can use while learning new skills and lets them work alongside veteran diesel mechanics on real trucks and equipment.

The three-year Ruan Technician Apprenticeship Program is broken down into 12 quarters during which time they have an opportunity to learn from veteran Ruan technicians. At the completion of each quarter, the apprentice must successfully complete a structured learning assessment and demonstrate that his or her skills are improving. Upon successful completion of the three-year apprenticeship, their tools will become the property of the apprentice while employed with Ruan, and he or she will be promoted to the level of Technician II with an opportunity to work at any Ruan shop across the country with openings. Ruan is excited to usher in the next generation of maintenance technicians, and we are willing to make a huge investment to do so.

  • Three-year paid and structured program.

  • Get more than $20,000 in Snap-on tools to use while learning your new skills. After graduation, these tools will be given to you to use while advancing through years of employment with Ruan.

  • Earn a competitive wage while employed as an apprentice and receive quarterly raises.

  • Eligible for full-time benefits options.

  • Safety boots and uniforms are provided.

  • Work in a safe environment and learn from some of the best technicians in the industry.

  • Opportunity to relocate to other Ruan shops throughout the U.S.
