Rule five of the Megasafe7 Rules of Safe Driving is Execute Safe Lane Maneuvers. Changing lanes should always be a slow, properly executed maneuver. Drivers can stay in control of the lane change by using S.O.S. Signal for at least four clicks, and Observe for at least two seconds to ensure a Smooth lane change for you and the traffic around you.
According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA),75 percent of lane change/merge crashes involve a recognition failure by the lane-changing/merging driver. Always look far in advance to safely react, and only change lanes if it safe for you and others around you. If it not safe to complete the maneuver, stop and start over later. It is better to take your time than risk having an accident.
