The 2016 National Work Zone Awareness Week, April 11-15, has a theme of “Don’t Be That Driver!” This theme is meant to remind the motoring public to stay alert and be prepared for changes when driving in and around work zones. Distracted driving and speeding are two common elements in fatal work zone crashes.
In fact, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) found that:
- Distracted driving was a factor in 16 percent of work zone fatal crashes in 2014
- Speeding was a factor in 29 percent of work zone fatal crashes in 2014
- Rear-end collisions are the most common type of work zone crashes
- Cell phone use decreases brake time by 18 percent—leading to a 25 percent increase in erratic driving
Safety has been a priority at Ruan since our inception in 1932, and this is showcased in our proprietary, Megasafe Safety Program. In particular, our Megasafe7 Rules of Safe Driving serve as a guide to not only our professional drivers, but to all of the motoring public. We want to encourage everyone to review these rules in honor of National Work Zone Awareness Week.
